What We Do

How We Hold Power to Account

TAG acts as a bridge between citizens and institutions — gathering evidence, raising concerns through proper channels and pursuing lawful remedies where necessary. Our work rests on seven instruments, applied strategically and always within the law.

1

Strategic Litigation

Where engagement fails, we approach the courts. TAG brings targeted High Court challenges — including judicial reviews of unlawful decisions and mandamus applications to compel officials to perform their legal duties.

2

Financial and Forensic Budget Analysis

Our financial specialists scrutinise municipal budgets, adjustment budgets and financial statements to expose problems such as structural underfunding, unfunded mandates and unrealistic revenue assumptions — the root causes of failing services.

3

Public-Interest Advocacy and Strategic Communications

We inform and mobilise the public responsibly. Through the media, community platforms and direct engagement, we ensure that findings reach the residents they affect — accurately, and without political spin.

4

Provincial and National Engagement

We lobby the provincial government and Treasury to intervene where municipalities fail in their constitutional obligations, and we escalate matters to the oversight bodies empowered to act.

5

Personal Liability of Officials and Councillors

Accountability must carry consequences. Where officials or councillors cause irregular, unauthorised, fruitless or wasteful expenditure, we pursue the personal-liability remedies the law provides — so that the cost of misconduct is borne by those responsible, not by residents.

6

Access to Information (PAIA)

Where transparency is lacking, we use the Promotion of Access to Information Act to compel the release of contracts, reports and financial records that the public is entitled to see.

7

Value-for-Money Audits (MFMA Circular 68)

We drive the implementation of National Treasury’s Circular 68 value-for-money framework — identifying and reporting irregular, unauthorised, fruitless and wasteful expenditure, and insisting on consequence management.
